THE BEAUTY HUNT: VINCE MARTINEZ

He is a master colorist, award-winning stylist and has been perfecting the hair of Dallas’ most elite for longer than he is willing to admit. Who might this go-to hair guru be? Why the one and only Vince Martinez, of Anderson Cox Styling Salon at the Stanley Korshak, of course! I stumbled into the arms of Vince spontaneously after a horrible color mishap and have never looked back. Not only has he been giving me my favorite hues of blonde for the last few years, he has become a dear friend. If you are looking for a stylist who will make you laugh until you pee in your pants, be the most upbeat cheerleader for what is going on in your life, sing to you with his voice of an angel (did I mention he is an international singing sensation?!?!), all while perfecting your hair…Vince is your man.

Vince is so generous to kick off a new series I am starting that will parlay with my ::the beauty Hunt:: posts. I loving giving my advice on products I am trying and have heard about… but why not also throw in the opinions and advice of the pros!? So without further ado… here are Vince’s beauty bombshell advice tidbits.

M: Ok Vince, once we have achieved that perfect, this-is-totally-natural, color-of-a-child’s, effortlessly-looking hue, how can we maintain our shiny locks?

V: First off, if you are doing any sort of chemical treatment (highlights, color, perm, etc) to your hair, you MUST use a sulfate-free Shampoo. Kerestase has a plethora of options for your specific hair type.
Also, do not shampoo everyday. If you cannot avoid showering every day, I suggest scrubbing your roots with tepid water (only) and then put a conditioning rinse (conditioner) on your ends. Even the most hydrating/moisturizing shampoos can dry your hair out if you are using it too often.

M: There are so many treatments out there that claim to help your color last. Can let us in on which ones actually do what they say?

V: Yes! A cellophane treatment will do wonders. It is a clear coating that is applied to your hair after your shampoo and seals in your color and creates shine. We leave it in for about 20 minutes while you sit under the heat and you will leave with super shiny locks which will last  2-5 weeks. I like to tell my clients to think of it this way…if you have two pieces of fruit and you wrap one up (in cellophane) and leave the other sitting out…which one is going to preserve and last longer? (I did this treatment last week and I loved it. I actually left the salon with it in my hair and rinsed it out hours later…baby soft strands… yes, indeed!)

Hunt: Vince, what products/treatments are you most excited about right now?

V: Anything Kerestase. Also, I am currently the only person in the salon doing this hot new true miracle treatment- for a month you will have virgin-like bounce and shine. It is a Keratin treatment (not to be confused with the Brazilian Blowout) that I recommend pairing with a cut. After I cut your hair, I put the treatment in (a steal at only $50, compared to the BB costing several hundreds) and give you a great blowout. That way it adds no extra time to your appointment.

M: Summer in approaching which means tons of time in the sun. How can I protect all of your hard work on my highlights, while still enjoying the sun?

V: I recommend Kerastase’s sun protecting spray but I’ll let you in on a little stylist secret. When you are by the pool or at the beach, dampen your hair. Then, spray a children’s spray sunscreen all over and use a wide tooth comb and comb through. This will protect your hair from the suns color draining rays and also stand as a barrier from chlorine.

Hunt: PERFECT! Now that we know how to protect, how can I achieve that beach-blown-wave if I have no time (I’ll be chasing a wild little man all summer)?

V: Shu Uemora’s Essence Absolute. It is a noursing oil-in-hair- creme. It’s just an all around must have product.

M: With so many wonderful salons and talent in Dallas, what sets you apart from other colorists?

V: Well there is a reason devoted clients fly me in from all over to work my magic. (He frequently rotates around to Austin, Amarillo, Houston, California- and all over the world for that matter- and has an upcoming trip to Spain to see clients). As far as highlights go, I follow your natural hairline. Everyone’s is different. It is more work but in turn, your color is always closest to your roots. Instead of traditional foil, I use wax paper. It is thinner and allows me to get the color closer to the root. They lay flat so I can put a ton in your hair. With foil, if you have too many, the foils will pull away from your root and can also leave color marks. (Do you ever get highlights and then two weeks later feel like you need to go again…this is probably why!)

M: Okay, lastly, what is your all time best hair advice?

V: When you think your hair needs help and you are about to drive to CVS and do it yourself. Immediately call your stylist! Never, I repeat, NEVER, do it yourself. Trust me, you will save yourself money.

So what did y’all think? Isn’t Vince the best! Are you digging this new series?
